The household name Detective Sherlock Holmes was brought back to life in the recent movie “Sherlock Holmes”.
Robert Downey, Jr. portrayed the great detective with a new twist on the old story. The movie was set in London, England much like the old stories, where the private eye resided at 221 B. Baker St.
Holmes starts off capturing and unveiling the infamous Lord Blackwell who is sentenced to death and hung. Sherlock is then struggling to find employment until there is word that the infamous Lord Blackwell has risen from the dead to wreck havoc on the city of London. Holmes and his trusty assistant Dr. John Watson (played by Jude Law) decide to embark on solving another mystery.
Jude Law portrays Dr. Watson very well, and shows the emotional battle between staying with his best friend, and giving the job up for his fiancé Mary. Every detail in the movie mattered, and was purely genius.
Mark Strong was the infamous bad-guy role as Lord Blackwell who loved to practice Black Magic, and practice on young women. The leading cast was accompanied by a fantastic array of supporting actors and actresses. Rachael McAdams played the beautiful young criminal of Irene Adler, who is also Holmes’ former lover.
The movie portrayed turn of the century England very well, and the filmmakers chose the right people to help do so as well. The way Sherlock and Watson discovered the clues described very well how limited the resources were in this period of time, and shows the intellectual abilities of the pair gracefully.
The movie was not just a “whodunit”, but a gun-slinging action film as well. The two were always on their toes and watching their backs. The evil followers of Lord Blackwell gave Holmes a hard time, and with no one, especially not time, on his side he had to fend for himself.
The suspense of “Sherlock Holmes” kept eyes glued to the movie screen for the whole film. With an end that leaves you in amazement and wonder, there is much anticipation for the sequel due to come out in 2011.
With a spectacular cast and an unpredictable plot, viewers will surely go back for more wit and humor from Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law.
